Having relocated to Plano as a parent of two young children, Dr.
Minette Riordan found she had trouble finding information on local
events and services she needed in the North Texas area. She
assumed that other moms probably were having the same problem
and would appreciate knowing more about what was happening in
their own backyards.

So she started doing some research.  One startling statistic she found
in Maria Bailey’s book, Trillion Dollar Moms, is that moms control over
2 trillion dollars in spending and they
make 80% of all household purchasing
decisions. Yet 70% of them feel like
mainstream advertising and marketing
does not address their needs and that
most companies are not speaking to
them.
This research along with the
overwhelming numbers of young
families living in North Texas and her
own experience led Minette to start a
newspaper that would specifically
target parents and provide them with
the resources and information they
need to raise children in North Texas.

Minette launched her company,
Scissortail Publishing, in 2002. The first
issue of Collin County Kids rolled off the
presses in February of 2003 with a print run
of 20,000 papers. From a quarterly local
publication, Collin County Kids grew to
become North Texas Kids, a monthly
newspaper with a print run of 50,000 papers
that reaches moms across the Metroplex.

Along with that growth came the need for
larger office space.  So Minette asked Bob
Gibbons of Reata Commercial Realty, Inc. to
help find the perfect office space to
accommodate their growing staff.  The
critical criteria included easy in-and-out
access, a Plano address, economical and
space that was already built-out for a quick
move-in.
After searching throughout Plano, Scissortail decided to lease a space in Brandywine Place – a single-
story office complex in east Plano.  Tenants walk directly into their space which is convenient for sales
people coming and going all day.  The space was already built-out and Scissortail was able to move in
within a few weeks of starting the process.

Families today are busier than ever and moms will tell you that they rarely sit down to read at home. So
North Texas Kids is distributed through nearly 2,000 locations which are in front of moms in the few
minutes that they get to sit down – at the doctor's office, gymnastics class, hockey lessons or a birthday
party.

North Texas Kids is recognized by parents around the Metroplex as the best local resource guide for
information, events, and parenting advice. All content is drawn from local experts with the goal of providing
parents with immediate access to information that will simplify their choices and help them raise happy,
healthy kids.

Scissortail Publishing is very committed to supporting the community also. A portion of each issue is
dedicated to non-profit organizations which serve children and families. Abundant resources are available
to families, but they rely on community support to offer their services. Through the donation of ad space,
article space, time and money, Scissortail helps organizations get the word out about what they need.
